The 8th International Geography Olympiad was successfully held from 29 July to 4 August 2010 in an enjoyable campus of the Sacred Heart High School for Girls in Taipei. Twenty-seven teams participated, and it was the first time that Croatia, Denmark, Hong Kong and Singapore had sent teams and Turkey had sent an observer.

The competition consists of three tests. Multi-Media Test was held with students at individual computers, and students were able to control the timing of each question themselves. The site of the Fieldwork Test was the Guandu Wetland, where students made detailed maps and careful observations to answer questions related to vegetation, human intervention, and the challenge of maintaining natural reserves in urban communities.

Apart from three tests, students also participated in a GPS geocaching activity, as well as poster presentations on geographical aspects or issues in their countries. Another highlight was the Cultural Functions, where students presented elements of their cultures in a variety of ways, such as dancing, acting and playing games. Participants also visited famous local sites, such as the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101, the Danshui night market, the Yehliu Geopark, the 921 Earthquake Museum and the Guang Shin Paper Factory. During the event, a Geography Education Day was held for team leaders and up to 80 local high school geography teachers participated. It was a valuable experience for both sides.
